Witches & Science is a eclectic performing arts collective dedicated to finding the space between intellect and intuition. Convening around the ritual of experimental music making and the community therein, we seek to expand our artistic capacities by challenging internal barriers of comfort through exploration and improvisation. This particular roster, loosely connected through the practice of Balinese traditional music and local group Gamelan Tunas Mekar, draws from a highly diversified background of skills to create a unique sonic experience. For this performance, W&S will come together in an homage to Estonian composer and ECM artist Arvo Pärt. These timeless and progressive works lend themselves seamlessly to being interpreted in ways that suspend time and alter present space. With a chamber group comprised of traditional acoustic and modern electronic instruments, we hope to do justice to the true spirit of Pärt’s distinctive voice: one of quiet spirituality and relentless self-invention. Works will include Spiegel im Spiegel, Fratres, Summa, Für Alina, and more; instrumentation may include electric/acoustic guitar, violin, viola, cello, drum kit, percussion assortment, piano, Balinese gamelan, bass guitar, string bass, vocals, modular synthesizers, and more.
