Dafnis Prieto’s Proverb Trio

Dafnis Prieto’s

Proverb Trio

Dafnis Prieto – Drums
Kokayi – Vocals, Rapping, Spoken Word
Oz Ezzeldin – Keyboards/Synthesizer

Since its 2009 premiere performance at the Whitney Museum in New York, the DAFNIS PRIETO PROVERB TRIO has deepened its rapport in front of live audiences around the world. Recorded in a single afternoon, the trio’s eponymously titled 2012 debut album for Prieto’s own Dafnison Music label has received much praise. Combining Kokayi’s freestyle poetry encompassing song, rapping, and vocal percussion, Dafnis Prieto’s explosive drumming, and Jason Lindner’s rhythmic-ally charged electronic keyboards, the PROVERB TRIO attempts to bring the refinement of composition to the action of collaborative improvisation. The music takes a different, unpredic-
table shape every time they perform, but always with the trio’s highly personal sound, engaging spirit, and joyful energy. “We’re creating songs,” Prieto, a 2011 MacArthur Fellow, says – not sprawling jams, but concise structures and infectious grooves created collectively, on the fly, around poetry that is as improvised as the instrumental parts.

“Genius is not about perfection: It’s about invention. Drummer Dafnis Prieto’s new, globally inspired trio date is a cultural prophecy, an oracle that presents a broad, awe-inspiring vision of the jazz future.”
— DownBeat Editors’ Pick

From 2015-18, the Proverb Trio took a hiatus from touring during which Dafnis Prieto focused on other projects, in particular his new Big Band which won a 2019 GRAMMY for its debut recording Back to the Sunset. But now the Proverb Trio is back in action. Performing for the first time since 2014, the trio will perform several concerts in the summer of 2019, with original member and David Bowie’s Black Star collaborator Jason Lindner and Egyptian-born Oz Ezzeldin alternating in the keyboard chair.
