Laura Richards – My True North
Couple’s Love Song: Trouble Me 10,000 Maniacs
It was 27 years ago in he Capecod of the Midwest in Door County, WI…..I met my True North…my love,
Her nam is Jana. I still remember meetInf her in The English Inn restaurant. We talked for hours and made plans to get together the next day. We talked about books and life and ever since that day, we have been together.
It took the summer of being friends for us to realize it was more than that….Jana had the guts to tell me how she felt about me. I already knew I loved her, but I was scared. I was scared that be who I really was.
The first time we kissed, we had snuck onto a boat called the Hey, Dude…we used to say hey, dude after that as our little code word to say “I love you”
That whole summer, we had the best time. We drive around and listened to music and talked and talked me laughed.
Jana had to go to Minneapolis to her new teaching job. We traveled to see each other each weekend…..we spent $450 a month on phone calls…..we would say that we willl call only for a few minutes. I would wake up and the phone would be n crazy to me. I had fallen asleep to her voice.
We did long distance for the school year and then Jana came back to WI. We keep moved in and began the come out.
I am not going to lie…..it was so hard. Our parents freaked out (better now) our friends were great for the most part….
We ended up moving to Denver and started a life and a family…..we have a 13 year old son Kyan.
He was with us at 4:30 in the morning on May 1st, 2013 when we had our Civil Union.
At that time, it was illegal for us to be married…..it has just become legal in the last couple of years.
I know this is not a “new” wedding—-however it has been 26 1/2 years and we are still together! It would be the best thing ever if we could be legally marry.
P.S. Jana’s Birthday is Valentine’s Day!
