Candace Ellman – Third Time’s the Charm
Couple’s Love Song: We’ll Be Together Again (Erasure)
Frank and I have known each other since 7th grade. We attended the same school (Long Island, NY), were in the same classes, and were in the same circle of friends. At the end of 10th grade, I was very sick and missed a final exam that I had to make up later in the summer. Since I had also missed a lot of school Frank came over to help me prepare. I was 16, he was a few months shy of his 16th birthday. Being hormone-fueled teenagers, our friendship ended up exploding into a full-blown love affair. This was back in June, 1983. We were each other’s “first” and became inseparable. We ended up dating for the majority of our remaining time in high school, but something happened a few months before graduation (we’re now not sure what exactly) and we went our separate ways, tinged with regret.
Although the lack of technology in the late 80s and early 90s made it difficult to stay in touch, we remained friends in the years following. Frank stayed on Long Island, while I moved out to Denver in 1990. In the summer of 1995, we met up at our 10-year high school reunion and realized we still shared a close and special bond. Frank visited me that December, and then I visited him the following May. Sparks flew and we realized we still had strong romantic feelings for each other. Frank made plans to relocate to Denver, but then something happened (and again, we’re not sure what), and the plan was abandoned, again tinged with feelings of regret. We each went our separate ways, and ended up marrying different people. We stayed in touch via email and later Facebook and texting, always mindful that at a minimum our friendship would persevere.
In September 2017, Frank started going through some challenging personal issues, including the termination of his marriage, and reached out to me because he needed someone to talk to. Coincidentally, I was in the midst of ending my marriage as well. After countless nights of texting back and forth and many, many phone calls, we realized that we were still very much in love. The passing of so many years have caused us to grow and mature and we can honestly say now that our bond is stronger than ever. We’ve had two “missed opportunities” in the past and are resolved to not let that happen a third time! We feel like soulmates; we each have had a void in our lives that now feels fulfilled because we are back in each other’s lives. We are committed to creating a new life together and growing old together, and winning this contest would enable us to expedite that process in a very special and meaningful way.
